A cosy alpine-style hotel with warm lit windows surrounded by snow at night

Location matters more than star rating

A 4-star hotel a 20-minute tram ride from the old town will lose to a simple 3-star guesthouse two streets from the market square — every single time in winter. Cold, dark evenings and icy pavements make "a short walk" the single most valuable amenity a hotel can offer. Before checking star ratings, check walking distance to the main square and to the train station, since you'll likely be doing both journeys in the dark.

Boutique, chain, or apartment?

Boutique and family-run guesthouses tend to sit closest to the action and often include breakfast featuring genuinely local food — worth it for a short trip. International chains (the reliable mid-range names found in most old towns) offer consistent quality and, usually, free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before arrival, which matters given how unpredictable December weather and flight schedules can be. Serviced apartments make sense for stays of four nights or longer, or for families, since you get a kitchen for breakfast and space to dry wet boots and coats — a genuinely underrated feature in winter.

Booking direct with the hotel: pros

  • Often includes free cancellation
  • Easier to request quiet rooms or late check-in
  • Direct contact if travel plans change

Booking through a platform: cons

  • Cancellation terms can be stricter in peak season
  • Reviews may be seasonally skewed (summer visitors rating winter listings)
  • Price can rise if you rebook after cancelling

Why cancellation policy is the most important line item

December travel is more weather-dependent than any other season — a delayed flight from fog or a cancelled train from snow is common. Always check whether a rate is fully refundable up to 24–72 hours before arrival. The cheapest non-refundable rate might save you €15 a night, but it isn't worth the risk of losing the entire booking to a missed connection. Where possible, book flexible rates in September and October, then switch to a locked-in cheaper rate closer to the date once your travel plans are confirmed.

Booking tip: Search for hotels using the market's own dates (not just "December"), since some old-town properties block out rooms specifically for market season and only release them once official dates are confirmed — usually in early September.

What to actually pack for comfort

Ask about radiator heating versus central heating before booking older buildings — some historic guesthouses in Central Europe still use single-room radiators, which can mean a chillier night than expected. If travelling with kids, confirm cot or extra-bed availability directly with smaller hotels, since online booking systems often don't reflect real room configurations for older buildings.

Our recommendation

For a 2–3 night trip, prioritise location over price and book old town, even if it costs more. For 5+ night trips or family travel, a station-side apartment offers better value and more comfort. Whichever you choose, lock in your dates as soon as the market's official opening is confirmed — see our booking timeline for exact windows.
